Family Fun Day Recap: A Day Full of Hockey, Laughter, and Community Spirit

This past weekend, the Paugan Falls Rapids hosted their highly anticipated Family Fun Day, bringing together fans, families, and players for an unforgettable day of hockey activities. With a lineup of public skating, youth games, and a thrilling skills competition, the event was packed with action from start to finish.

Public Skating Hour with the Rapids

The day kicked off with a public skating hour at 10 am, where Rapids players hit the ice alongside fans, young skaters, and even some parents. With over 75 people on the ice, the arena was buzzing with excitement as kids skated alongside their hockey heroes, many snapping photos and sharing laughs. It was a fantastic way to start the day, bringing the community closer to the team and creating memories for kids and families alike.

11 and Under Game: A Scoring Showdown

At 11 am, the younger age group took to the ice for a thrilling 11 and under game, featuring over 25 kids split between the Blue/Dark and White teams. The game was a high-scoring affair, with the Blue/Dark team narrowly edging out the White team in a 12-10 victory. Many players shone on the ice, with standout goals from Emerson Cretes, Tanner Chamberlin, and Ava McKelvey. Each goal was met with cheers from the crowd, making it an exciting and memorable experience for everyone involved.

12-17 Game: Intensity on the Ice

Following the younger kids, the 12-17 age group hit the ice for their game at 11:40. This game had a different vibe, with a more competitive edge and tighter gameplay. Over 15 kids participated, showcasing their skills and giving the crowd plenty to cheer for. Rapids players joined both teams, supporting and encouraging the kids, and making it a special moment for everyone on the ice.

The Mascot Showdown: Ronnie Rapid vs. Big Mike

One of the most eagerly awaited moments of the day was the mascot race between Ronnie Rapid and St. Mike's mascot, Big Mike. This two-lap race had the crowd on their feet. Big Mike took an early lead, but Ronnie quickly caught up, and the two jostled for position. As they approached the final stretch, Big Mike made a bold move to take the inside lane and started to taunt Ronnie. But just as victory seemed within his grasp, Big Mike lost his edge and fell, allowing Ronnie Rapid to swoop in and claim the win in spectacular fashion. It was an unforgettable race, filled with drama and laughter, and a highlight for fans of all ages.

The Rapids players then showcased their abilities in a series of skills challenges, competing for titles and the coveted hot seat in each event:

  • Fastest Skater: In a nail-biting finish, Sam McLaughlin emerged as the fastest skater, clocking in at 15.40 seconds, narrowly beating out Cole Peck (15.42 seconds) and Ryan Peck (15.44 seconds). Rounding out the top 5 were Carter Peck (15.61 seconds) and Alex Lafreniere (15.65 seconds).
