Mid-Season Update: Injuries, Roster Moves, and Playoff Push

As the Paugan Falls Rapids enter the second half of the EOSHL season, it’s time to take stock of the team’s current roster, recent additions, and the playoff implications ahead.

Injury Updates

The Rapids have faced their fair share of injuries this season, forcing the team to make adjustments to the lineup and seek reinforcements. Here’s the latest on the Rapids’ injured players:

  • Carter Peck: Day-to-day with a lower-body injury. His return is expected soon, pending further evaluation.
  • John Mahoney: Out since the season opener after sustaining a broken ankle during a fight. Mahoney has been placed on the long-term injured reserve and is expected to return after Christmas. He remains eligible for the playoffs due to LTIR status and will be a significant addition when healthy.
  • Alex Lafreniere: Currently sidelined with a mild concussion. He is also projected to return after Christmas, providing the Rapids a much needed boost at centre.
  • Jay Pothier: Recovering from broken fingers and is expected to rejoin the lineup in mid-January.
  • Joshua Blacksmith: Out for an extended period of time with a lower body injury. Expected to return mid to late January.

The injuries have undoubtedly posed challenges, but the Rapids continue to persevere with roster changes and strong team efforts.

New Additions to the Lineup

The Rapids have made strategic moves to bolster their roster and maintain competitiveness despite their injury challenges.

  • Nathan Kellenberger: A versatile forward who brings experience from the OJHL (North York Rangers) and the Swiss MyHL. Known for his skating, defensive play, and physicality, Kellenberger is expected to make an impact starting this Saturday against the Mariners. Elite Prospects - Nathan Kellenberger

  • Gabriel Cuillerier: A steady two-way forward from Orleans, Cuillerier impressed in his debut last weekend. With his ability to create offensive chances, play responsibly defensively, and perform well on draws, Cuillerier looks to be a key piece moving forward. Elite Prospects - Gabriel Cuillerier

Key Trades

  • November 28, 2024:Etienne Champagne was acquired in a two-step trade: the Rapids first secured Ryley Egan from the Manotick Mariners for cash considerations before flipping him to the South Grenville Rangers in exchange for Champagne. The acquisition of Etienne Champagne has already proven to be a smart move for the Rapids. Since joining the team, Champagne has played two games and tallied three assists, showcasing his offensive vision and ability to make an immediate impact.
  • December 10th, 2024: The Rapids acquired the rights to Chris Newhook and Thomas Vezina, as well as cash considerations and future considerations from the Manotick Mariners in exchange for Timothy Cousineau. Both Newhook and Vezina are highly skilled players expected to have an impact in the 2025-26 season and beyond. This trade reinforces the team’s long-term plans and strengthens its future outlook.
Playoff Push and Key Goals

The second half of the season brings heightened focus as the Rapids battle for position in the EOSHL's Capital Division. With all teams qualifying for playoffs this year, securing higher seeding will be crucial. Here’s what fans need to know:

  • Playoff Eligibility Rules: Players must play at least 7 regular-season games, including 2 road games, to qualify for playoffs. The coaching staff will focus on ensuring player eligibility while building a deep, playoff-ready roster.
  • Playoff Format: The first round will feature a best-of-3 series within the division, adding extra importance to every remaining regular-season game.
  • Division Standings: The Rapids currently sit in 4th place in the Capital Division, just two points behind both the Arnprior Rivermen and Pontiac Comets. With two games remaining against the Comets and one against the Rivermen, the Rapids have a legitimate shot at climbing to 2nd place and securing home-ice advantage in the first playoff round.
Looking Ahead

The Rapids are gearing up for a big home matchup this Saturday against the Manotick Mariners. Fans will have the opportunity to see new signings Nathan Kellenberger and Gabriel Cuillerier in action, as well as the first home appearance for Etienne Champagne, as the team looks to bounce back and build momentum for the playoff race.
