Rapids Fall 5-4 to Rivermen in Season Opener

The Paugan Falls Rapids opened their 2026-27 regular season on the road Saturday night, falling 5-4 to the Arnprior Rivermen in a tightly contested season opener.

Charlie Olmsted opened the scoring for the Rapids at 8:27 of the first period, when his dump-in from the red line took an unexpected bounce and found its way past Rivermen goaltender Carlen Lyle to give Paugan Falls an early 1-0 lead. Liam Murdoch and Ryan Peck picked up the assists.

Arnprior's Stephen Bird answered to tie the game, assisted by Brett Ashton and Danny Johnson, but less than a minute later the Rapids regained the lead. Greg Gibson deflected a shot into the net for his first goal as a Rapid, with Declan Flanagan and Logan Beaupre picking up the assists, sending Paugan Falls into the first intermission ahead 2-1.

The Rivermen pulled ahead during the second period. Alexandre Cote and Bird each converted on the power play before Cote added his second of the night, giving Arnprior a 4-2 advantage heading into the third.

The Rapids refused to go away.

Keon Trocolli-Roik scored on the power play in the third period, redirecting a Liam Murdoch point shot to pull Paugan Falls within one. Charlie Olmsted also picked up an assist on the goal.

Arnprior restored its two-goal advantage when Max Saito scored on the power play to make it 5-3, but the Rapids answered once again. Ric Shin fired home a point shot with 10:48 remaining, assisted by Garth McLaughlin and Ryan Peck, to bring Paugan Falls back within one.

The Rapids continued to press for the tying goal right to the final buzzer but couldn't find the equalizer.

The teams were separated by very little throughout the night, with Arnprior finishing with a narrow 42-39 advantage in shots. Special teams ultimately proved to be a difference in the one-goal game, as the Rivermen converted on three of their four power-play opportunities while the Rapids finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

Aiden Foley turned aside 37 of 42 shots in the Rapids net, while Lyle made 35 saves on 39 shots for Arnprior.

Despite the result, the Rapids showed plenty of fight in their season debut, battling back in the third period and staying within striking distance until the final buzzer.

Paugan Falls will remain on the road next Saturday night when they take on the South Grenville Rangers in their second game of the regular season.
