Rapids Fight Back in Tight 6-4 Loss to Mariners

The Paugan Falls Rapids went toe-to-toe with the Manotick Mariners in a thrilling contest, at times even controlling the play, but ultimately fell 6-4 in a game that showcased their growth and determination. After quickly finding themselves down 3-0 in the first period, the Rapids regrouped during the intermission and came out strong in the second, dominating much of the play.

The Mariners struck early, with Brett Gustavsen scoring twice in the first 10 minutes, and adding an assist on their third goal. However, the Rapids weren’t deterred. Ryan Peck got the team on the board when he finished off a beautiful feed from Garth McLaughlin and Alex Lafreniere, cutting the lead to 3-1. Just one minute later, Nic Carroll took advantage of a clean faceoff win from newcomer Nathan Kellenberger, firing a high blocker-side shot to make it 3-2. Kellenberger earned his first assist as a Rapid on the play.

The Mariners answered with two more goals to extend their lead to 5-2, but the Rapids fought back once again. Ryan Peck scored his second of the game on the power play, assisted by Cole Peck and Etienne Champagne, bringing the score to 5-3.

In the third period, Nathan Hudgin of the Mariners added another goal, making it 6-3. But the Rapids weren’t done yet. With 13:38 remaining, Raphael Lajeunesse found the back of the net off a quick pass from Champagne, firing a shot high glove side to narrow the deficit to 6-4. Despite continued pressure, the Rapids were unable to close the gap further.

The Rapids narrowly outshot the Mariners 39-38, showcasing their ability to compete with one of the top teams in the league, especially after a slow start. The 6-4 loss is a testament to the progress the Rapids have made over the last two seasons, battling hard and staying in the game despite the early deficit.
