Rapids Win First Exhibition Game 8-5

CHELSEA, QUEBEC - The Meredith Centre was alive with anticipation on September 9th, 2023, as two expansion teams of the EOSHL – the Paugan Falls Rapids and the Centre Hastings Ice Miners – faced off in a much-anticipated exhibition game.

It was a night of firsts for the Rapids. Their debut game, the unveiling of their pristine white jerseys, and their first victory in front of 127 cheering fans.

The first period was filled with end to end action. Despite an early goal by Pineshish Whiteduck, assisted by Keyshawn Francis and G Whiteduck, the Ice Miners commanded the ice with their experience. The standout player for the Ice Miners, Luigi Martone, netted two goals, contributing significantly to their early 4-1 lead.

However, the tide turned in a dramatic fashion during the second period. A scuffle between G Whiteduck of the Rapids and Nick Ferguson of the Ice Miners seemed to be the catalyst for the Rapids' resurgence. With an energized offensive, led by Ryan Peck's two goals and two assists, the Rapids overcame their initial deficit, ending the second period with a lead of 6-5.

Young legs and sheer determination played in favor of the Rapids during the third period, allowing them to maintain control and add two more goals to the scoreboard. Goals from Dakota Ostrowski and Kodiak Whiteduck sealed the deal, bringing the final score to a resounding 8-5 in favor of the home team.

The game was as much about skill and strategy as it was about heart and resilience. Assistant Coach Steve Carroll voiced his pride in the room post-game. “I’m really proud of our guys. To go down 4-1 early and be able to show the composure to mount a comeback, especially as a young team against a team with much more experienced players like the Ice Miners, was really impressive,” he said.

As the players exited the locker room, they were met by a jubilant crowd in the lobby, celebrating the Rapids' victory and the promising season that lies ahead.

This game not only marked the beginning of the Rapids’ journey in the EOSHL but also highlighted the team's potential and the thrilling matches we can expect in the near future. With a debut like this, the Rapids have certainly set a high bar for themselves.
